Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) is a way for federal agencies to support scientific excellence and technological innovation through funding proposals. Awards can range from $150,000 to $1 + million for technology and innovation research.

This workshop will cover who is eligible for SBIR funding and the basics for a good application. Participants will also learn about SBIR’s funding phases and agency specific grant application tips. The workshop will be held at SIUC’s Dunn Richmond Economic Development Center. A live stream and moderation of the SBIR workshop will be offered at 4 locations and will also be live streamed for individual viewing.

Participants who attend the on-site workshop at SIUC will have an opportunity to schedule a brief one-on-one session with Roland Garton to discuss their specific proposal ideas. Those sessions will take place the afternoon of the workshop. Participants who attend one of the hosted webinars will have an opportunity to schedule a brief teleconference with Roland Garton to discuss their specific proposal ideas. Those calls will take place on Wednesday, November 20. Individual sessions will not be offered for online viewing participants.

This workshop is organized by the Illinois University Incubator Network (IUIN) in partnership with the Illinois Small Business Development Center Network, the IL PTAC at Western Illinois University, and the Southern Illinois University Carbondale Research Park. The IUIN is led by EnterpriseWorks at the University of Illinois Research Park. Funding support for this workshop is provided by grants from the U.S. Economic Development Administration.

Roland GartonRoland Garton is President & Lead Consultant for Garton Consulting Services, Inc. and He has over three decades of experience with grant development, government contracting, program and project management, training and documentation, and program administration.

Garton has written and advised on scores of SBIR proposals worth several million dollars to 9 of the 11 federal SBIR-granting agencies. He is an SBIR workshop leader and national I-Corps participant, and has managed several projects resulting from successful SBIR proposals. In addition, he has set up bookkeeping and timekeeping systems for many SBIR recipients, prepared invoices and Incurred Cost Proposals, and has helped navigate multiple companies through federal audits, many of them conducted by the Defense Contract Audit Agency (DCAA).
